Justice for John ‘Sparky’ Fleming Jr.: A Life Stolen by Hospital Protocols

John “Sparky” Fleming Jr. was the heart of his family, a retired Atlanta police officer, family man, proud father, and beloved friend whose humor and zest for life filled every room. Known as “Sparky the spark plug” since his youth, he was full of energy, jokes, and adventure. He served his community honorably, guarding Martin Luther King Jr.’s grave, escorting Ronald and Nancy Reagan, and even chauffeuring dignitaries like Pat Nixon and Rosalynn Carter during their visits to Georgia. His daughters grew up adoring their father, proud of his service, his strength, and his unwavering love. Though he had suffered a stroke decades earlier, Sparky remained determined, staying active with weights, cycling, and constant exercise. His family’s memories are filled with joy, laughter, and the undeniable presence of a man larger than life.

That all changed when Sparky entered Piedmont Fayetteville Hospital in April 2023. What began as a treatable infection related to a catheter spiraled into a nightmare that bore the familiar hallmarks of America’s deadly hospital protocols. Heidi recalls how her father had been making progress with home therapy watching his movies, eating well, and eager to regain independence. He wanted nothing more than to return home, care for his beloved cat Linda, and maybe even visit the beach again. But once inside the hospital, he was trapped in a system designed not to heal, but to harm.

The family watched in disbelief as Sparky was bombarded with unnecessary drugs like insulin for a man without diabetes, high blood pressure pills despite low readings, powerful opioids, and even cancer drugs he did not need. He was deprived of food, water, and IV fluids while being fed laxatives and diuretics. Nurses pressured Heidi into signing off on a contrast dye procedure he initially refused. Shortly after, his neck swelled, his breathing collapsed, and his records were manipulated to obscure the allergic reaction he suffered.

As days passed, the abuse escalated. He was placed on BiPAP oxygen that blew so forcefully it starved him of air, while his chart revealed orders for remdesivir and a pile of other dangerous medications. Keeping in mind he did not go into the hospital for Covid and did not test positive for Covid until the “end of his stay”. At one point, Narcan was administered, suggesting he had been overdosed. Sparky lost 30 pounds in just two weeks, his once-strong frame reduced by neglect and deliberate malnutrition. All the while, he pleaded to go home, begged for water, and still mustered the will to do exercises from his bed, humming the “Rocky” theme to show his family he was not giving up.

The indignities were endless. Staff mocked him for being unvaccinated. Doctors pressured the family into signing a Do Not Resuscitate order, painting a grim picture of broken bones and hopeless outcomes. Nurses dismissed Heidi’s concerns with cruel comments like, “When it’s your time, it’s your time.” Even in his final hours, Sparky fought to breathe as morphine was pushed under the guise of “comfort care,” a common tactic used to hasten death. His daughter will never forget the pain in his eyes as he realized he was being denied the chance to recover and return home.

On April 17, 2023, at 6:50 a.m., John “Sparky” Fleming Jr. drew his last breath in a darkened hospital room. But in that moment of devastation, Heidi witnessed a ray of light pour through the window, shining directly onto her father’s face. She knew then that while the hospital had stolen his life, heaven had welcomed him home, reunited with his daughter Melissa and the family he so deeply loved.

The cruelty John endured is not an isolated story it is one of countless tragedies across America where families were manipulated, patients starved and overdosed, and lives cut short under the banner of “protocol.” These are crimes against humanity, and they must be named as such.

Betrayal Project USA exists to ensure stories like Sparky’s are never buried. Our victim-led organization is building a record of truth, honoring those taken too soon, and demanding accountability for these atrocities. We are widows, widowers, parents, children and survivors ourselves, standing shoulder to shoulder with families like Heidi’s to expose the systemic betrayal that stole our loved ones.

Heidi’s voice, and the voices of so many others, are rising together: these deaths were not natural, they were orchestrated. The world must know. Justice must come.

If you or a loved one has been harmed by COVID-related hospital protocols, shots, or policies, we urge you to document your story at betrayalprojectusa.org. Together, we can end these crimes against humanity, demand reform, and ensure that no family ever suffers this betrayal again.
