Justin Todd Oakes: “Mom, They’re Trying to Kill Me”

Justin Todd Oakes was only thirty-five years old. To his mother, Chanda Brown, he was not just her son, he was her life. She had him when she was eighteen, and in many ways, they grew up together. He became the big brother his younger brothers looked up to like a father. He loved his family deeply, loved his dog, loved his country, and worked as a truck driver, traveling the roads with independence and grit that fit him so well.

Justin was strong, intelligent, and full of life. Chanda says he was the kind of child who only wanted to sit on your lap and be loved. As an adult, he remained loyal to the people he called family. Even former step-siblings were still his brother and sister to him. His great nieces and nephew called him “Tree” because of his last name, Oakes, and because he was big enough and strong enough for them to climb on like one.

In December 2021, Justin became sick while he was in Michigan for work. He lived in Tennessee, but his trucking company was based in Michigan, and he had stayed off the road for a couple of weeks while trying to recover. After seeming to improve, he worsened during the night. His boss found him weak, vomiting, and out of it, and insisted he go to the hospital. Justin did not want to go. Chanda says he never trusted hospitals or doctors, but he went.

At first, Justin told his mother not to come. He said the hospital planned to give him oxygen, antibiotics, and fluids because he was dehydrated, and he expected to be there only a couple of days. Chanda spoke with him every day, and he sounded like himself. Then she received the call that he was being moved to the ICU. She left Tennessee immediately and drove to Michigan.

When Chanda arrived, Justin was still awake, talking, and sitting in a chair. Yet he was isolated behind glass. His mother was forced to sit in the hallway and talk to him through a window. She offered to wear a mask, gloves, whatever they required, but she was not allowed into the room. She brought him an M&M Blizzard, and he ate it. But Justin told her he kept asking for water, and they would not give him any.

Chanda says Justin had already made it clear that he did not want Remdesivir. His boss’s wife had also warned them to make sure he did not receive it. Chanda directly asked the nurses if Justin had been given Remdesivir. She says they told her no. That he had refused it and had not received it. Only shortly before he died did a nurse tell her Justin had received one dose. When Chanda later obtained his medical records, she discovered that it was more than one dose. In fact, it was 4 doses before they cancelled the rest due to him declining.

Justin was also given Baricitinib under the brand name Olumiant. After reviewing his records, Chanda, who has worked as a pharmacy technician for more than twenty-four years, saw additional medications that alarmed her: fentanyl, propofol, lorazepam, midazolam, and paralytics while he was on the ventilator. She questioned why medications that suppress the respiratory system would be given to someone already struggling to breathe. The answer she remembers receiving was always the same: “That’s protocol.”

Before Justin was ventilated, he told his mother, “Mom, just take my dog and go home because they’re trying to kill me.” Those words haunt her.

After they put him on the ventilator, Chanda refused to leave the hospital. She stayed in the hallway and made staff walk around her. She had left once to rest, and when she returned, her son’s condition had changed. She was not leaving him again. She watched people die in that ICU every day. She said they would wheel them out one after another, and she knew something was terribly wrong.

Chanda was not allowed to touch Justin until after he died.

His organs began shutting down. His kidneys and liver failed. The night they told her it would not be long, they asked if she wanted him brought back if he coded. Chanda said no—not because she wanted him gone, but because everything had shut down, and she did not want them to hurt him anymore.

Justin died on January 2, 2022.

Chanda says the moment she knew, without question, that the hospital protocols killed him came when she read his medical records. She saw the drugs, the timing, and the changes in his kidney and liver function. She saw records that claimed conversations had occurred with Justin when he was ventilated or already deceased. She saw language that made no sense for a man who could no longer speak for himself.

The loss has changed everything. Chanda says she has lost faith in the medical system and no longer goes to the doctor because she does not trust it. She says every morning, when her feet hit the floor, Justin dies again because he is still gone, and he is never coming back. People tell grieving mothers to move on. Chanda’s answer is simple: you never move on from losing a child. It does not matter how many other children you have. Justin was hers.

Betrayal Project USA is giving mothers like Chanda a platform to tell the truth about what happened to their loved ones. These stories expose egregious crimes against humanity carried out under the guise of COVID-19 and public health. Our organization, board, and volunteer force are made up largely of victims, widows, widowers, survivors, and families who suffered similar institutional betrayal. We are documenting these stories, seeking reform and accountability, and building a community of support for those who refuse to let their loved ones be erased.
