Kevin Plourde: A Life of Service, A Death of Betrayal
Kevin Plourde spent his life serving others. A former police officer, devoted husband, loving father, coach, and man of faith, he was known for his kindness, leadership, and infectious sense of humor. He was the person who would stop to help a stranger on the side of the road, encourage young athletes, and put his family first. For more than three decades, Kevin and his wife Kimberly built a life together rooted in love, faith, and service.
In September 2021, they believed they were finally entering a new chapter. They spent Labor Day weekend together in Maine, hopeful about the future. Neither of them knew it would be the last vacation they would ever share.
While in Maine helping his father after the death of his mother, Kevin tested positive for COVID-19. Initially, he sought treatment through urgent care and later an emergency room visit when his breathing worsened. Kimberly says he was sent home with basic medications and inhalers but no meaningful intervention. As his oxygen levels continued to decline, an ambulance transported him to Central Maine Medical Center on October 1, 2021.
According to Kimberly, the experience changed almost immediately once hospital staff learned Kevin was unvaccinated. Communication became difficult, information was limited, and she felt both she and her husband were treated differently. Kevin texted her from his hospital room, telling her he felt staff were not listening to him. Although doctors initially expressed optimism because he was otherwise healthy, Kimberly watched from a distance as his condition steadily deteriorated.
Kevin was placed on escalating levels of oxygen support, eventually reaching BiPAP. The mask was so tight that it left marks on his face, yet Kimberly says his requests for relief were ignored. He repeatedly complained of discomfort and anxiety. Instead of improving, he became increasingly dependent on oxygen and was given medications including Ativan and Tocilizumab.
One of the most troubling aspects for Kimberly was Kevin’s isolation. Because of hospital restrictions, she was unable to be by his side. Their communication was limited to texts. Kevin told her he was hungry and thirsty. Kimberly repeatedly questioned why he was not being given adequate food or water. She recalls being told he could not eat because he might need testing, but she could not understand why he was being deprived of nutrition day after day.
Then came the call that changed everything.
On October 9, Kimberly learned that Kevin had been intubated and placed on a ventilator. She says the hospital informed her after the procedure had already occurred. Kevin had previously expressed that he did not want to be intubated, yet Kimberly was told the decision had been made because doctors believed he was unable to make medical decisions for himself. Later, when she reviewed his records, she was shocked to find documentation indicating she had given permission for the procedure during a phone call. Kimberly insists she never authorized the intubation and was only informed after it had already happened.
She immediately traveled from Virginia to Maine.
When she arrived, she was still not allowed into Kevin’s room. Instead, a traveling nurse brought an iPad into the ICU so Kimberly could speak to her husband remotely. During the call, Kevin appeared to respond to her voice. He attempted to move his arms and open his eyes. The nurse encouraged Kimberly to keep talking, believing he could hear her. Moments later, Kimberly watched as staff increased his sedation because they feared he would awaken and remove his tubes.
For Kimberly, it was a heartbreaking glimpse of the husband she loved still fighting to come back.
The weeks that followed became a cycle of hope and despair. Doctors alternated between reporting signs of improvement and warning that Kevin might not survive. Kimberly was eventually permitted brief visits, but by then new complications had emerged. Kevin developed sepsis, E. coli, and an additional pneumonia while hospitalized. What began as COVID pneumonia had become a cascade of hospital-acquired complications.
As his condition worsened, Kimberly says she was pressured regarding end-of-life decisions and discussions about resuscitation. She never stopped believing Kevin could recover. Even when doctors encouraged her to bring their daughters to say goodbye, she continued asking whether the hospital was providing care designed to preserve his life.
On October 27, 2021, Kevin Plourde died in the hospital at just 53 years old.
For Kimberly, the loss was devastating. The man who had spent his life protecting others was gone. The husband she had known since high school, the father who made his daughters laugh, the coach who mentored young athletes, and the officer who served his community would never come home.
Today, Kimberly shares Kevin’s story through Betrayal Project USA because she believes families deserve answers and because she does not want other families to endure the same experience. She describes a pattern of isolation, lack of communication, deprivation of food and water, disputed consent, escalating interventions, and hospital-acquired infections that she believes contributed to her husband’s death.
