A Lifetime Devoted to Health Ended by a Deadly Hospital Protocol
Dr. Michael “Mike” Shalhoub was not a frail or chronically ill man. At 66 years old, he was a respected chiropractor, former bodybuilder, and longtime pillar of his California health and wellness community. For decades, he taught others about nutrition, the body’s natural ability to heal, and the dangers of relying blindly on pharmaceutical medicine.
The hospital was the last place his family ever expected him to die.
In August 2021, Dr. Mike became seriously ill and struggled to breathe. Before seeking hospital care, he called his younger brother, Sam, asking whether he could obtain ivermectin. Sam could get it, but it would take several days. Mike later said a nurse friend might be able to help him, but his condition worsened too quickly. On August 5, he entered Hoag Hospital in Orange County, California.
That decision marked the beginning of a devastating eleven-day ordeal.
Dr. Mike was placed on an oxygen mask and made one boundary unmistakably clear: he would not consent to being placed on a ventilator. Although that wish was honored, other now-familiar elements of the COVID hospital protocol soon followed.
His family was prohibited from entering the hospital or standing at his bedside. They could not observe his care, comfort him, or advocate for alternative treatment. Sam was largely dependent on text messages from his brother for information.
Then Mike told Sam that the hospital planned to give him a drug Sam had never heard of: remdesivir.
At first, Sam did not understand what that meant. He trusted his brother’s knowledge and believed the hospital was trying to help him. Mike continued sending photographs and messages from behind his oxygen mask. Even while fighting for his own life, his greatest concern was for his lifelong friend Joey, who had also become ill. “How’s Joey doing?” he repeatedly asked.
That was the kind of man Dr. Mike was: even from a hospital bed, he was worried about someone else.
Within approximately three days, however, his messages began to diminish. His responses became less frequent until he could no longer communicate at all. Isolated from those who loved him, Dr. Mike deteriorated rapidly after receiving remdesivir.
Sam remained convinced that his strong, healthy brother would recover. “He was a bull,” Sam recalled. He could not imagine that this illness would take him.
Only when Dr. Mike was unresponsive did the hospital finally allow his son, Gabe, into the room. Gabe held a telephone to his father’s ear so Sam could say goodbye.
Sam thanked his brother for everything he had taught him and told him that he loved him. Within hours, Dr. Mike was gone.
He died on August 16, 2021—without most of his family ever being permitted to see him.
After his brother’s death, Sam began investigating remdesivir and concluded that the treatment his family had trusted was responsible for Mike’s fatal decline. To Sam, the terrible irony is impossible to ignore: a man who spent nearly 50 years warning others about the dangers of pharmaceutical medicine entered a hospital for help and never came home.
Dr. Mike’s death changed the direction of Sam’s life. The brother who had mentored him since the 1980s became the driving force behind Sam’s public mission. Though Sam had spent decades privately coaching and educating thousands of people, he stepped in front of a camera because he could no longer remain silent.
