“I’ll Text You in the Morning.” Olivia Never Got the Chance.
Olivia Muralles was only 41 years old when her life was abruptly taken from the husband, children, family, and friends who loved her.
To Luis Muralles, Olivia was a beautiful soul—a devoted mother, daughter, sister, wife, and paralegal for the State of Arizona. The oldest of four siblings, she had helped raise her three younger brothers. Luis and Olivia built a blended family, raising four children together and helping raise three others. During their 21-year marriage, they filled their lives with family, friends, travel, and dancing.
Olivia especially loved the beach. Luis had promised to take her around the world, and he kept that promise. Yet some of his most precious memories are of marrying her at the courthouse while she was eight months pregnant and the closeness they shared while dancing. Since her death, he has been unable to return to the dance floor.
In August 2021, illness swept through the Muralles household. Olivia developed a fever, headache, body pain, and extreme weakness. She was not drinking enough water and became severely dehydrated. According to Luis, however, she was breathing normally and had no respiratory distress.
When Olivia became too weak to remain at home, her father and brothers carried her to the car and took her to Banner Health. Luis was also extremely ill and could not accompany her. The hospital would not allow her family to go inside with her.
After being admitted, Olivia sent Luis one final message:
“I’m dehydrated. They’re going to keep me overnight. My phone’s going to die. I’ll try to charge it. I’ll text you in the morning.”
The message gave Luis every reason to believe she was conscious, communicating, and expected to return home.
Instead, the next morning—only hours after Olivia entered the hospital—a doctor called and said she had suddenly “turned for the worse” and was not going to survive. Luis was stunned. How could a woman who arrived breathing on her own and expecting treatment for dehydration now be dying?
By the time Luis and their children arrived, Olivia was already gone. They were permitted to enter only to say goodbye. Luis found his once-vibrant wife lifeless with a ventilator tube in her mouth.
He could not understand why she had been mechanically ventilated when, to his knowledge, she had not been experiencing breathing problems. Luis believes the sedation and ventilation overwhelmed her body and caused her heart to stop. Her entire hospitalization lasted less than a day.
Olivia’s death certificate listed COVID pneumonia, a conclusion Luis questioned because she had not shown signs of respiratory distress before entering the hospital. When the hospital would not perform an autopsy, he paid for an independent examination himself.
Luis later contacted attorney after attorney, hoping someone would investigate Olivia’s sudden decline. Instead, he encountered one closed door after another. Repeatedly reliving her final hours for people unwilling to examine the evidence became unbearable. Eventually, Luis withdrew and focused on surviving.
Nearly five years later, the wound remains open. Luis has watched his children carry a pain he cannot take away. Olivia’s death shattered not only their household but also her parents, brothers, extended family, and large circle of friends. At her funeral, white roses—Olivia’s favorite—filled the room.
Luis is not seeking money. He wants the truth, accountability, and recognition of what happened to Olivia. He is speaking now because other families remain silent, overwhelmed by grief and disbelief. His message to them is simple: “Tell your story. Start talking. Your family members deserve that.”
