He Kept Believing He Would Come Home” — The Story of Robert Lewis
Robert F. Lewis Jr. was a husband, a man of faith, and someone deeply loved by his family. In late December 2021, after caring for his wife Kim through her illness, Robert himself became sick. At first, there were moments of hope. One day he even surprised Kim with a confetti cannon in their home, laughing with relief that they believed the worst was behind them. But within hours, his condition worsened, and on December 28, 2021, he was taken to Mercy Hospital in Buffalo, New York.
What followed was nearly three weeks of separation, fear, confusion, and heartbreak for his wife and family. According to Kim’s testimony, Robert spent 18 days isolated in the hospital while she fought desperately for updates, access, and the ability to advocate for him.
Kim documented nearly every day of Robert’s hospitalization in detailed notes. She described long periods where communication was difficult or nonexistent, repeated struggles to get answers, and the emotional devastation of being kept away from her husband while he grew weaker. She recalled sitting outside the hospital for hours because it was the closest she could physically get to him. She prayed there daily, believing her presence still mattered even when she was barred from his bedside.
Throughout his hospitalization, Robert remained grounded in his faith. Kim described moments where, despite exhaustion and suffering, he continued speaking about Jesus, healing, and hope. During one of the rare visits she was eventually granted, Robert wrote on paper: “I’m still healing.” Even near the end of his life, Kim said he continued expressing faith that he would recover or that God would guide him home in peace.
Kim’s notes also describe her concerns about Robert’s physical decline during prolonged respiratory support, his inability to properly eat and drink, and the emotional toll of extended isolation. She repeatedly advocated for more involvement in his care and for his wishes to be respected.
As Robert’s condition deteriorated, difficult end-of-life discussions began. Kim described feeling enormous pressure while trying to navigate decisions she never imagined having to make alone. Yet even in those final moments, she remained by his side, holding his hand, praying over him, and reassuring him that he was loved. Robert Lewis passed away on January 15, 2022, at the age of 60.
Today, Kim continues to speak out because she believes families deserve answers, transparency, compassion, and the right to advocate for their loved ones during medical crises. Her story reflects the pain carried by many families who were separated from those they loved during the COVID era and left forever questioning whether more could have been done.
Betrayal Project USA exists to give families like Kim’s a platform to tell their stories, preserve historical testimony, seek accountability and reform, and build a community of support for those who experienced institutional betrayal and medical harm.
If you or a loved one experienced harm related to COVID-era hospital policies, medical protocols, isolation practices, shots, or other forms of institutional betrayal, please document your story at Betrayal Project USA. Your voice matters, and these stories must never be forgotten.
