James “Andy” Hodge: Betrayed by the Protocol, Silenced by the System
James “Andy” Hodge wasn’t supposed to die. At 38 years old, he was full of life, healthy, strong, and vibrant. He had a big laugh, a soft heart, and a fiercely loyal bond with his sister, Ellie Hayse, who called him her best friend. But when Andy sought help at a Kentucky hospital for a foot issue, an issue stemming from a previous surgery, he had no idea he was stepping into a system designed to ignore, isolate, and ultimately extinguish him.
Andy didn’t go to the hospital for COVID. He went because something was clearly wrong with his foot. There were signs of restricted blood flow, possibly a clot, and he needed immediate attention. But instead of treating the actual medical issue he presented with, hospital staff focused solely on diagnosing him with COVID.
His first test came back negative. That didn’t stop them from treating him for Covid. Once he transferred to the second hospital, they tested him again. Until they got the result they wanted, a positive. At that point, everything changed.
Ellie shares with heartbreak and rage how the hospital locked Andy into the COVID protocol track, refusing to treat the problem with his foot. Despite her relentless advocacy, even with power of attorney, the doctors ignored her pleas. No interventions were made to address the circulatory issue, and the hospital failed to act as Andy’s condition worsened. He eventually suffered a stroke while in their care and ended up on a mechanical vent.
Instead of acknowledging the stroke or reevaluating their approach, hospital staff doubled down on sedating him, isolating him, and continuing the deadly protocol that so many other victims across the country endured. They gave him Remdesivir. Sedatives like Precedex and Fentanyl. They moved toward intubation. And they silenced Ellie, treating her like a nuisance rather than a concerned sister fighting for her brother’s life.
This wasn’t care. It was cruelty.
Andy Hodge died, not from COVID, but from a toxic system that refused to treat him as a human being. He was failed by the hospital. Betrayed by the institution. And robbed from a family that loved him deeply. And grandchildren that he will never meet.
But Andy’s story is not an isolated case. Across America, hospitals followed the same script—ignoring actual medical needs, forcing federal protocols, and shutting out families. These are not simply bad outcomes. They are crimes against humanity.
Betrayal Project USA was created by victims and survivors who, like Ellie, were dismissed, ignored, and devastated by a system they were told they could trust. Our board is made up of widows, widowers, and survivors who are demanding change. We are preserving stories, educating the public, and building a nationwide movement to expose these crimes and stop them from continuing.
If you or a loved one has been harmed by COVID-related hospital protocols, policies, or shots, please share your story at betrayalprojectusa.org.
We must build the record. We must seek justice. We must never let them bury what happened to Andy and the hundreds of thousands like him.
