Marsha is an author, podcast host, and national advocate dedicated to protecting the elderly and vulnerable from abuse within hospice and healthcare systems. She was born and raised in Georgia in a close, faith-centered family, and was taught the values of compassion, accountability, and the belief that every human life has inherent worth. Those principles continue to guide her advocacy today.
In 2017, Marsha’s life changed forever after the death of her mother, Frances Souther. While under hospice care, she witnessed the inappropriate use of powerful medications without consent that put her Mother into a coma and ultimately led to her death on June 20, 2017. The loss was especially devastating since her Dad, Durwood, had served as a chaplain for that same hospice for 15 years. What the family believed would be a place of safety and comfort became the catalyst for her mission of advocating for others.
Unable to accept that it was simply her Mother’s time, she began extensive research into hospice practices. Through this work, she connected with Hospice Patients Alliance (HPA) and its founder Ron Panzer, a hospice nurse whistleblower who exposed unethical hospice practices in 1998. She discovered that her experience was not isolated, and committed to speaking out, educating others, and supporting families facing similar situations. She became a board member with HPA, where she took calls from individuals in crisis, offering validation, support, and guidance during some of the most difficult moments of their lives because she understood.
She is an administrator for the Facebook support group Murdered by Hospice, founded by Liz Isner. The group has grown to more than 7,000 members and serves as a safe, supportive community where individuals can share their stories, grieve openly, and find reassurance that they are not alone. The group’s mission is not only healing, but prevention—helping families find critical information before it is too late to protect their loved ones.
In 2025, she published Betrayed by Ho$pice and Healthcare: Stories from the Deathbed, a comprehensive 481-page investigative work featuring firsthand accounts from 34 families, along with eight years of research. The book explores hospice history, financial incentives, drug practices, respite care, brain death, organ harvesting, and critical resources families need before accepting hospice as their only option.
She has been a guest on numerous podcasts and media platforms and through speaking, writing, and advocacy, she remains committed to raising awareness, honoring the sanctity of human life, and empowering families with truth, education, and hope. Knowledge is power.
